2012 GCR Available

THANK,DAVE!!

Can anyone tell me if the weight in the IT category is the minimum weight without driver? Also, why would a car with less horsepower(and in some cases, less cylinders) have higher weight requirement to meet the minimum?

THaks all for any help!!

All weights are with driver. (This is true in all classes unless explicitly stated otherwise.)

I'll let the ITAC guys answer your other question, but you might want to give a specific example of what you mean.

Four door IT car

I re-read the GCR and I think I know the answer but just for clarification can nascar bars be put in the two rear doors? If not as the rear windows still function according to IT rules can the car be raced with the windows in the down position. Not looking to start a war of words just a little bit of interpretation from those more vocal as to the rules as written.

My opinion would be that you may not take advantage of the NASCAR bar allowance at the rear door, based on the fact that the allowance specifically states "...door tubes may extend into the front door." No mention of rear door, ergo no allowance.

As for running the rear windows down, the only relevant statement I find is on page 102 of Jan 2012 GCR... "All closed cars shall run with both front door windows fully open." Since rear windows are excluded from the "fully open" requirement, my opinion would be you can run the rears up or down, your choice. And if that is true, I'd bet the corner workers/safety personnel are going to vote... "down".

The current IT classification process can be found by logging in to scca.com, then click on Resources/File Cabinet. On that page, scroll down to Club Racing and click on Advisory Committee Addendum - IT Process.

Basically, the process uses power-to-weight ratio, along with certain modifiers, to class the cars. Bear in mind however, that not all cars listed in the ITCS (over 300 line items) have been "processed" using this relatively recently-developed tool, so there are some outliers, to be sure. But BTW, number of cylinders is not a factor in any direct manner. If you haven't already, read the addendum - it will definitely shed some light on the subject for you.

Re: wheel rule

VW Rabbit GTI- Old rule stated 14". Now no larger than 15" may be used. Can a GTI Rabbit use 13" wheels? Not clear on this. Thanks

IMO, the only diametric limit is the maximum as listed on the spec line. There is no minimum diameter, therefore 13" wheels (or 12" or 10", for that matter) are okey-fine.

Les, a 24X volvo change was submitted to the CRB fom the november call, I presume you will see it in fastrack shortly

That's the way I read it. You can use 13", 14", or 15" wheels, up to max width of 6"

Looks like the ITA Jetta and Scirroco got missed with the wheel upgrade.

And they still can't seem to get the VW weights right. We've been told that aero does not play a factor in the classification process. And AFAIK, that is still the case. Yet you still have things like this:

ITA:

Golf GTI 16v '87-'89, 1780cc, 2220#
Jetta GLI 16v '87-'89, 1780cc, 2280#
Scirocco 16v '86-'88, 1780cc, 2320#

These cars are pretty much identical. The Golf and the Jetta are built on the A2 platform while the Scirocco is built on the A1 platform. But they all have the same engine/trans/suspension/brakes.

ITB:

Golf III, '93-'97, 1984cc, 2395#
Jetta III, '93-'97, 1984cc, 2395#
Golf 2.0, '99-'03, 1984cc, 2350#
Golf GL, '85-'92, 1780cc, 2280#
Jetta GL, '85-'92, 1780cc, 2280#
Rabbit GTI, '83-'84, 1780cc, 8.5:1, 2080#
Scirocco II 8v, '83-'88, 1780cc, 8.5:1, 2130#

The Golf/Jetta III are the same platform (A3) and have the same drivetrain/trans/suspension/brakes, and the weigh the same (way it should be).
The Golf 2.0 is the newer car (A4 platform), but has the same engine/trans as the Golf/Jetta III, but weighs 45# less.
The Golf/Jetta GL ('85-'92) are the same car (hatch vs. sedan), and weigh the same (as they should.
The Rabbit and Scirocco are the same car w/ some slightly different body work, yet a legacy 50# difference for a perceived aero advantage w/ the Scirocco.

ITC:

Rabbit 1.7, '81-'84, 1715cc, 2050#
Jetta 1.7, '82-'84, 1715cc, 2080#
Scirocco I 1.7, '81, 1715cc, 2110#
Scirocco II 1.7, '82-'84, 1715cc, 2110#
Rabbit 1.7, '82-'84, 1715cc, 2110#* carb model, 4-spd trans
Rabbit, '75-'80, 1457cc, 1471cc, or 1588cc, 2000#
Scirocco '75-'80, 1457cc, 1471cc, or 1588cc, 2040#

All these cars are built on the same platforms. The 1.7 cars are all the same w/ the exception of the carb'd Rabbit. But why does the carb version w/ only a 4-spd weigh more? The '75-'80 Rabbit / Scirocco are also the same car, yet still carry that legacy perceived aero weight difference.

I submitted two letters to hopefully correct those.
1. Wheel sizes.
2. The ITA 87-89 Jetta has a listed wheelbase of a A1 car.
3. Various brake sizes incorrect. (No idea where they came up with a 245mm brake size.)
