A1 VW's in ITB

Well with the A3 VW's with the 2.0L engines coming into ITB, is there any hope for the A1 VW's? tough enough with the A2 VW' and Volvo's, I wonder if it is time to get another car. What does an A1 have to have in order to lead the class? I'm really interested in your opinions. thanks

I can't see that a 0.2 liter displacement is more than enough to make up for the 190 pound increase in weight for the newer Scirocco. My ITC Scirocco was faster than any ITB Scirocco I came up against.

I'd be for moving the 1.7 VW's (Rabbit/Scirocco/Jetta) to ITC. Unfortunately, I don't think they'd be as fast as the 1.6's. Do the 1.7 VW's get the 'G' cam like the 1.6? If not, the extra 130cc probably couldn't overcome the extra weight on the 1.7 cars.

Bill can tell us why a 1.7 VW Rabbit weighs so much more than a 1.6!

I wouldn't mind having the 1.7 liters moved into ITC. I wouldn't use one, but....
Would it set a precedent for other manufacturers with 1.7liter engines( I can't think of any) to get classified? I doubt any of them would make a big splash(Renault Encore??)

Hows it goin", Mark?

Hi Drew,

The 1.7 Renault is already in ITC, so the precedent has been set.

If we could get the "g" cam for the 1.7, it might have a chance in ITC.

Mark,

I wouldn't call 50# 'so much more'. Interesting that a 1.7 weighs 50# more than a 1.5 or 1.6, but a 1.8 weighs 130# more than a 1.7!

Ah, but you all know that this is one of my favorite subjects, VW weights in IT. Let's review:

1.5/1.6 Rabbit in ITC - 2000#
1.6 Scirocco in ITC - 2040#
1.7 Rabbit in ITB - 2050#
1.7 Mk I Scirocco in ITB - 2110#
1.7 Mk II Scirocco in ITB - 2110#
1.8 Rabbit GTI in ITB - 2180#
1.8 Mk II Scirocco 8v in ITB - 2270#
1.8 A2 Golf 8v in ITB - 2280#
1.8 Mk II Scirocco 16v in ITA - 2320#
1.8 A2 Golf 16v in ITA - 2220#
2.0 A3 Golf 8v in ITA - 2350#

So, what does this tell us??

1) a 1.5 Rabbit in ITC weighs the same as a 1.6 Rabbit in ITC
2) a 1.5 Scirocco in ITC weighs the same as a 1.6 Scirocco in ITC
3) a 1.7 Rabbit in ITB weighs 50# more than a 1.5/1.6 Rabbit in ITC yet weighs 130# less than a 1.8 Rabbit GTI in ITB
4) a 1.7 Mk I Scirocco in ITB weighs 70# more than a 1.5/1.6 Mk I Scirocco in ITC yet weighs the same as a 1.7 Mk II Scirocco in ITB
5) a 1.8 16v Mk II Scirocco in ITA weighs 210# more than a 1.7 Mk II Scirocco in ITB
6) a 1.8 16v A2 Golf in ITA weighs 100# less than a 1.8 16v Mk II Scirocco in ITA
7) a 1.8 16v A2 Golf in ITA weighs 60# less than a 1.8 8v A2 Golf in ITB
8) a 1.8 8v Mk II Scirocco in ITB weighs 50# less than a 1.8 16v Mk II Scirocco in ITA
9) a 1.8 8v Mk II Scirocco in ITB weighs 160# more than a 1.7 Mk II Scirocco in ITB

And this makes sense how?

BTW, as a side note, I noticed that the spec weight for the 68-77 Beetle 1.6 is 2002# :screwy:

There will be a pop quiz on this later this week!

After hitting the wall at RA 1 time to many, I transfered all the "good stuff" to an 86 1.8 8 valve Scirocco. Did all the usual prep with the exception of removing the undercoating. There is a little more sheetmetal up front and some minor design changes, so I wasn't worried about making minimum weight. WRONG! I've got 103# in ba1last, passenger seat, 10# extinguisher, 15# sway bar, 33# for the spare and still have to run over 1/4 tank of fuel. This car is classed 150# to heavy. But I can run 14" wheels even though they never came with them. Go figure!

Mark, I'm guessing you did not put enough cage in the car.Our MK 2 Scirocco is only about 25 lb lite with no ballast. We have run
49's at RA {qualifying ARRC 1999} and it still is competitive. Here some of the 8V
cars came with 14" wheels and I have the owners manual to prove it.I know it is faster than C MK 1's

The cage is 1.5" .120 wall safety devices bolt in that has been welded with gussets and larg mounting plates. Nascar door bars, double passenger door bars with .060 aluminum diamond plate door skin (heavier than stock) horizontal dash bar, belt bar mounted at floor level between main hoop plates, 2 forward bars (8 point). There's a lot of cage there.
e-mail me if you want, Vantage #51. I'd like to talk to you about what you did.

Dino, I guess we will both be looking for that spare tire in the rear, eh?
