A2 Transmissions

Not a race question, but I have a 16V 2L with a buggered tranny. What other transmissions will fit. I believe the 2L trans has a larger diameter input shaft than an 8V one, but the ratios are the same except for 5th gear. Will an A3 unit work or must I find a 16V A2 someplace?
Thanks

Warren,

I believe all the A2's used 020 boxes. I don't know about a difference on the 2L 16v cars. I think that A3's used 02A or 02J boxes. These are cable shifted boxes and would require that you change the shifter as well.

Almost any 020 tranny will fit. You want a 16v 020 because it will have the proper (larger) output shaft your engine should have...however you can run an 8v tranny with an 8v clutch plate if you're in a pinch. Really it should be fine.

A3s still used the 020 gearbox and should work for you.

In fact almost all the parts from an A2 will bolt onto an A3 and vice-versa...headers, suspensions, gearboxes, but that's another story.... A3 to ITB !

Thanks Bill and Bill,
The local VW wrecking yard wants $850 for a used 16V box and considerably less for anything else and this is to replace the tranny on my street car anyway. So I can put in a cheaper one. Great help.

That's rediculous. We have new racing boxes for that.

Bill Sulouff or anyone else,
What does the 020 transmission with code 4K come out of? I know where I can get one with a 16V pressure plate for a decent price.Cable or rod shift?

Thanks
Warren

I believe it has a nice final drive (3.89). Very good for a spare transmission and then put a 3.66 in the 4k. Most internals are the same and will work in a IT legal box with a case that has the right stuff.

FYI, the 16V A1, 16V A2, and all 4-cyl A3 each had the rod-shifter 020 box with the larger diameter input shaft. Thus, a box from a 4-cyl A3 would work just fine on your 16V street car with the stock clutch disk, and give it longer legs (ratio-wise). Using an 8V A2 box with the smaller diam input spline will also work if you use the 8V clutch disk.
