Have the new Avon DOT tires been approved? Anyone heard good or bad on them?

Yes, they are a DOT tire. But the SCCA has to provide approval for any new tire. I just found out about them today. From what I've been able to tell any new tire has to be available in 4 diameters and 6 sizes by April 30th to gain approval. According to Tirerack that is just how many sizes they have available today. But, were they available by the end of April and has the SCCA given them their blessing?

Guess I'll just call the SCCA tomorrow.

Chris, I suspect you may be thinking about Solo 2. AFAIK, there is no "approval" required for tires in the ITCS except that they be DOT-approved.

Thumbing through my 2004 GCR, page ITCS 17, par 7.a.2, "Any DOT-approved tire is permitted." There are no further restrictions to, or requirements for, tires in Improved Touring...

Ok. Well, that was actually why I was asking.

Need new tires for my autox ride.

At any rate, has anyone heard anything about them? They're cheaper than a Hoosier so it's just another alternative when it comes time to reshod the IT car also.

Sorry - I was thinking the same thing Greg was, in the context of IT. Try the SoloII folks, Chris. I haven't the faintest.

I've used the Avon 20x7x13 slick on my GP car (rears) and they work GREAT. The rear end of a Wabbit doesn't do much anyway.

I've had a set on the rear for about 10 races, and they still pick up all kinds of junk while driving through the paddock. Balance is still good, so when they finally go away, I'll change them.

FWIW I just talked to SCCA and the tire is approved for SoloII. I'm buying a set for the turbo Miata. I plan on tracking the Miata at some point this summer so maybe that will provide some feedback on how the tire will work as a race tire? The guy I talked to at SCCA said Tirerack was instrumental in getting the tire over here and approved and they think they've got a really good tire on their hands. To me that means they have a really good tire on their hands or they have a high profit margin tire on their hands. We'll see.

Chris- I doubt any tire that makes a good autocross tire will make a good roadrace tire. (without a different compounded version)

Now, it might make a good Qualifying tire, but who wants to go to the trouble of doing a whole different setup for a carcass you can't race on? I would entertain the idea of trying a few qualifying laps on the Hoosier autocross tire, then racing on the roadrace version, if I had lots of wheels and more money!
