I need someone to settle a "discussion" that a friend and I are having about A2 eligible cams. He says that the hydraulic G-grind can be used in a RD code engine. My belief is that G-grinds are not eligible for any A2 engine. Opinions,please.
 
For A2's you need to drop the term "G Grind", that was the cam for the rabbits. BUT what is so confusing is the stock A2 part number from a GTI is 026 G, that is stamped right on it. That cam is fine and perfectly legal. I don't even know how the engine would run if you dropped in a rabbit "G Grind" into a G or AA code head - anyone, does it even work?

026 109 101 G - is the part number and for 173 Euros you can have a new one. That was a dealer quote on April of this year.

I've seen a hydraulic G-grind listed from Techtonics.It had different duration and lift from stock. It may be one they've created, too. BSI also sells a version. Mine is currently the 100,000 plus mile original that was in the car and I'm looking to make improvements.

You cannot put a solid lifter cam in a hydraulic lifter head. It'll bolt up, but it won't work. If you look at the lobe profiles between the two types of cams, you'll understand. The solid lifter lobes are much 'sharper'.

New OEM A2 Hydro cams can be had for $50.

I was just going through some of my spares and I found an 026 G cam in there. I don't need it as I run all solid lifter motors. Let me know if you're interested in it.

I might have an interest in the 026G after I look and see what's currently in the motor.Is your spare new or used? Everyone, In my pile of well used spares I found 026109101G and a 026109101A. I haven't found specs to see what's the difference ,but the Techtonics site lists the "A" for 85-87, two engine codes only.They also list a G-grind hydraulic cam, part 049109101GH and it's distinct from the solid version for a Rabbit GTI.This appears to be a VW part number ,as they list the Techtonics cams under a different numbering system. Given what little I know at this point, it would appear that the 026G and 026A are both legal, depending on the engine code in the car, but the 026G is not the same thing as a G-grind hydraulic cam.

Warren, sounds like you got it. And yes, Bill they can be had much cheaper, I was just amazed that the dealer wanted so much. 026G's, from my experience, are harder to find in the US NEW and I have gotten parts from over there before with no issue. I was shocked at the quote.

That darn G-Grind term just started confusing everyone when it came to the A2 motors and I usually just go by part number now to make it easier. Sounds like you have found both cams. I don't think anything that starts with a 049 is legal, I could be proven wrong but I don't think. (is that an A3 part/2L crossflow?)
