if i wanted to pursue an updated ignition system for my ITB car (not sure at all possible yet...), can i have the newer larger igniter in a different location that would be outside the distributor?

the first gen crx ITB distributor is as follows and 11 is the igniter:

the newer crx's are as follows with 20 being the igniter:

and the GCR that i am looking at is
Quote:
e. Any ignition system which utilizes the original distributor for spark timing and distribution is permitted. Internal distributor components and distributor cap may be substituted.
Quote:
Ignition System - A system which converts on-board storage battery supply
voltage into a timed sequence of high voltage pulses suitable for igniting
engine combustion mixtures in a controlled manner.
so i see the igniter as part of the ignition system and not part of the distribution system even though it is installed with the distributor.

any thoughts?

I interpret the rules as you do. The ignitor has nothing to do with timing, so is not part of the distributor. I actually use an external MSD coil which is pretty obvious with the hood open, and no one has ever said anything about it to me.
