Could not find anything on this specifically, is this type of catch can legal?


Especially since it would not do:

9.1.3.i. Oil catch tanks are permitted. All engine breathers or vapor recirculation lines, if disconnected, shall vent to a catch tank of one (1) quart minimum capacity. Such catch tanks shall not be mounted in the driver/passenger compartment. Original valve cover(s) may be modified to alter or to add breather/filler.

Why, cuz it's not one quart or greater capacity? If not, then it would be illegal.

What if a windshield washer reservoir is also used as an engine breather reservoir... ...is it still "legal"?
 
You are venting the breather to the bottle, but the rule does not specify that the bottle needs to go to atmosphere or not. I do not have one of these but plan to shortly.

IIRC the model for the 944 turbo is a 1 qt. capacity.

This bottle has benefits, at least for the 944. With the 944, if you vent the breather to atmosphere, you will develop leaks in the seals at the front of the engine. By keeping vacuum on the vent, you prevent these leaks. Fancy, yes, but there's a reason for it.
