Clutch release bearing goes out. diagnostic?

I just spent about 4hours taking out my tranny. I know, that's slow, but hey! that was my first time doing this alone. And I could have shaved about 2 hours if there hadn't been kid interruptions, and if I had been able to figure out how to pop half shafts from the tranny properly (now I know!)

Anyway, here are some pics of the bearing (was new 300 miles ago) and the clutch springs. I do not ride the clutch, btw.

If any one has any clue what could have caused this to happen, I'd really like to know before I put the transmission back in the car.

It is possible to misadjust the linkage just enough that the bearing makes light contact. You did say you do not leave your foot on the pedal after a shift. Then again you can have it depressed for an extended time and have the same result mainly at higher RPM or when leaving the grid. The wear you are showing is not extreme in that the bearing has not 'burned' itself out. If iot still spins freely and noiselessly you are doing ok. Race clutches are stiffer and will go thru themselves and bearings sooner than stock ones, so I have found. Before buttoning things up-replace everything-clutch and both the throwout and pilot bearings.

it turns out that I mis-adjusted the cable. got it way too tight and wore the beating out. The reason I dropped the tranny is because it was making an awful lot of noise. That bearnig is shot, dead, burned, kaput!

Lesson learned. The clutch was (is) new and so are all the bearing. I just so happened to have a spare new release bearing, which will be going in next week.
