CRX Gearbox

I know there was a thread on identifying gearboxes by the factory number on the box, but I can't find it. I am looking for a SI box for an 89 and the local boneyard has several. He konows that they will fit, but cannot tell me if the are 88-89 or 90-91 which I know have different input shafts. Can anyone help??? Thanks (Fault in old box, cracked shift forks)

I would doubt that anyone can tell much information from the serial number on the trans. I have tried to determine what final drive is in several 84-87 CRX transaxles from the serial # without luck. Have tried dealers and Honda tech support with no luck...

Pretty much all the 88-92 D series cable trannies were labeled L3's, you can indeed tell the difference from the case numbers, but its rather cryptic and most Honda techs and dealers have no need for this knowledge base...so they are cluesless. I mean try asking a tech or parts guy if the hubs from a 99 civic so and 95 integra are interchangable, and then see what kind of looks you get. You need to talk to racers and people who build cars to get this info...we know what fits what and what the numbers all mean

That said: the easiest way to tell the FD ratio is ofcourse to spin the mainshaft and cound how many times the dif turns in relation...as for telling years apart, cound the splines on the main shaft:

84-87 CRX = 19 splines or 13/16"
88 CRX= 21, 7/8
89 CRX = 20, 7/8
90-91 CRX = 20, 7/8
90-91 Civic(all) = 20, 7/8

Hope that helps...

Hmmmm....Now, I wouldn't go throwin' a statement like that around in a racing forum. He may have some decent straight line acceleration, but I'd like to think I have a few all motor hondas that would kick his butt if you threw some curves and elevation changes in there

I meant to say Drag Racer. 300+ HP from a 2L engine 12K RPM. Hows that? He also road races a Motorcycle.
