CV Joint Clearance

New outer cv's for A1's from GKN will not clear spindle. I guess GKN are only making the larger ones for A2's and up. I was able to machine them to fit. What are other options for us A1ers? Late model spindels and brakes? Machine spindles? Or just keep on machining the cv's?

I had that problem a couple of years ago. The diameter of the outer CV on some are larger than others, and would touch the bottom of the hub carrier. I had to try a couple of times to get the correct ones.

I guess it's time to just rebuild them, instead of replacing the entire 1/2 shaft assembly.

I would take some dimensions, and specify the differences and only accept the smaller diameter ones.

Y'all aren't going to like the "book answer" on this: Lack of a parts stream hasn't ever been something we can consider, except as described by the "supersede" allowance in the ITCS.

Late model spindels and brakes? Machine spindles? Or just keep on machining the cv's?

Technically, none of those options are within what's allowed.

I had this same problem, and was able to find some that fit. Some mount to the shaft with a recessed ring, while others use a regular circlip. Only problem is I don't remember which was which. I found two new one and used those and hopefully they last awhile, since its the inboard ones that always go. I have to take one of the axles out this week anyway and Ill get back to you.

Same problem here, hope these new ones from parts4vws fit better. They are sold as 90's for the A1.

Should know this week.

90mm outer will fit. Some rebuilders dont watch what size the outer is. They look the same. You can also find some 80mm, setups. Might go faster , for a while. MM

Sandro, the only one that I've blown through on track, was an inside CV joint. Never lost an outer, but always replace both 1/2 shafts every season.

That's where I purchased mine. The guy I talked to said no more GKN's for us. Only Empi's. Which only lasted 2 weekends for me.

Regrease the new ones. Some come very dry. Mobil one synthetic grease or the Valvoline Syn grease works well . Repack evry 10 hrs. MM

The new GKN's I just received from parts4vws fit just fine.

(Unless those were 100mm spindles I tried them on.)

Using a synthetic grease here and in the wheel bearings.
