Daytona

Hey all, Im an NER guy but you are all very lucky to have tracks like Sebring and Daytona to rip on. My question is how often do yall race Daytona and if i could please get you to express some opinions on how you felt about it. What a dream to hit the high banks. I'l make the trek someday.

It is an awesome place!! There is usually a big difference between the front runners in each class...the banking goes on forever! You reach terminal velocity...then keep going (with the draft)! Lap times are 2:15's for ITS 2:20's for ITA (ITB/ITC could chime in on times) we race the first weekend in May and the first weekend in August. Sometimes a school or regional there in september.

Ditto wht Evan said. Only down side, be in good shape to walk a long way for everything. The place is HUGE!. You've never go faster in your life! Front ITC times run 2.34...more or less.

The facility itself is very impressive. Hands down the nicest I have raced on. ISC certainly does things right as far as construction goes. Plenty of shop space, which is needed when you have 350+ cars show up!

At first, the banking is slightly intimidating since it makes you think you're running inside a fishbowl. You look as far up the windshield as you can, and all you can see is racetrack. Once you get used to it, it's pretty much a no brainer since you are not carrying a lot of speed on the banking, you really only top out through the tri-oval. Blowing by people under braking into T1 is fun though!

On the whole, Daytona is nice and I definitely recommend you try it out. What it lacks is what I would call a true "pucker factor" corner or section of track. In contrast, Sebring has the T14-15-16 complex, T17, and especially T1. Those corners are all taken at the very limit of grip, and at a high rate of speed. Daytona has little to compare with those, with the possible exception of the Bustop Chicane on the back straight. The other glaring difference is that Daytona is smooth as glass, while Sebring is....um, um,......not.

As long as you're planning, I would recommend you drive down for next year's Double SARRC at Daytona in early August. Find a willing racer to let you park your rig at their place and fly home. Then fly down on Labor Day and attend the Regional/ECR at Sebring. You can tell the wife you're doing it in the interest of research!

Good description of the two tracks. But I will say that even though I go into T1 and brake as late as imaginable, I still suck in a lot of air. And I've never done the chicane without the chicken bone in my right foot raising it's ugly head. Chalk it up to limited experience, I suppose.
Sebring is a whole 'nuther" animal. Its surface and turns are best described as relative degrees of fear and intimidation. T1 is blind faith and T17 and 17A is multiple choice with a ZONK waiting behind Door 3 if you do it wrong. If it rains, evrything is frightening! I love it!

Evan is the only one run in the 2:20.'s LOL just kiddin I'm gettin there!!! We are at 2:24-2:27
Don't forget how much fun it is to race in the rain at both of these tracks......Especially the start / finish line at Sebring EEEGADSS!!!

Hey O.B I still hate your car. Sorry you can't make the 13 hour race with us this year. Lots of fun
and of course tons of laughing with our group.

Just to stay on topic Daytona is a blast. Security has backed off lately making it much more enjoyable
for us and our families. The track is just super fast running 27's in a ssc neon just flying.

Daytona is a must do

:023: on Daytona.

And sometimes you can find Isaac, LLC picking up the tab over at the North Turn, where the original races were held on the beach.

Kolin you kill me!!!
as long as you hate the car and not the driver......well at least not when I'm driving it. oh wait Londo doesn't drive my car anymore...lol

I am so jealous I want to be at the 13 hour YOU SUCK!
New motor being built for next season.
Peace!

Evan I found this on You tube very nice!!!

OB when is the motor going to be ready? That was sebring 05 in sept race... I was running from JD in the 325...I actually won that one! shows the difference between ITS and ITA on the straights though!

We are hoping for the Turkey Trot....Motor builder is crazy busy.....and waiting on parts..

Is JD coming back at all I have not seen him? and that video is a great battle between you two.

Do they allow track walks and things like that after the engines stop for the day.....I love walking and taking pics of tracks I go to. Also Im having some car problems....is there any IT car rental companies in the area?

and

Should be all you need. BSI has Miati and ISC has Miati, ITS RX7, and IT7.

I don't think they allow track walking after an event is done for the day. I really doubt it. The DIMS police are REAL strict about people and cars on the speedway before, during, and after the event. If they do allow a walk through, you'd better bring your jogging shoes. The course is almost 4 miles long, and they will escort you out by 6 pm. If you're working on your car, you will stop and leave. They are serious about security. In this day and age, it's only smart to be that way.

I always bring running shoes...hehe. Anyway what do you mean they escort you out @6? You have to leave the track at night you cant camp in the infield or anything? I guess things are somewhat laid back up here in comparison. We can walk many of the tracks in the middle of the night. At least noones ever stopped me. Interesting though.....you may have just stopped me from being jumped by securety.... :P

Exactly that...if you are working on your car and 6pm or dusk, you will stop and leave the track. If you fail to comply, they will stop you and escort you outside the track. There is no camping or overnight stays...unlike the 24hrs or the 500. The gates to the course from the paddock are closed prior to that time and locked. It is within their realm to have you arrested if you break the rules.

That's not as bad as it seems. It's just something you have to live with to play the game. Every track has its rules. We used to walk Road Atlanta at night during the Runoffs, drunk on our butts. That is until this linebacker looking dude with a security badge drove up and ran us off. We complied...that night. The rest of the nights we were stealth...and not as drunk.

That's another thing...no alcohol within the confines of the Daytona track.

It's worth the PITA. The staff constantly change the rules and the officials stay confused by that, but if you keep a cool head and do all things right, it's more than worth it. It's such an easy place to get hooked on. You can't really imagine what it's like to start a race group of over 100 cars!

If all else fails, there are some excellent restuarants in the area, plenty of close, reasonable motels (although I doubt that's the case during the 500), a ton of history to the area, and a beautiful beach to lie on and lick your wounds...should they happen.

Hell ya....I was there for 12 days in Feb for the 500 and all the pre races. Well, except for the 24hr which I hope to go to this Jan. I loved it although it rained a few times.

If all else fails, there are some excellent restuarants in the area, plenty of close, [/b]

I wonder if Hooters would mind if I slept there??? :015:

I hate security gaurds that think they are cops.

NHIS was 'picky' about walking the track for a few years after 9/11. That I understand. They have since seemed to have eased up. Watkins Glen is a nice track to walk also. I've also walked Mid Ohio a couple of times. The one thing in common those walks had: :birra: :birra: :birra: One time we brought a little red wagon to carry the beer.
