Front Tow Hooks

Well, with the impending rule change and since I have the nose off the car right now anyway, I figured it would be a good time to look at adding the front tow hook. But, my question is where best to add it?

I don't have a factory front tow hook, so I can just extend that. I want to avoid the pitfalls of just tying into the bumper, as I'd like not to have safety remove my bumper for me.

That said, about the strongest point that I can see would be where the subframe connects to the main frame near the radiator. The easiest route would be just to wrap some high-strength nylon webbing around this point and out through the bumper. Any thoughts?

I've been looking at my car as well, and am considering the same thing. However, use a piece of cable instead of nylon. It will be less likely to break if it hits a sharp edge and it won't be damaged by the elements as much (remember the seatbelts saga

).

I was thinking about using chain, but that is just extra weight. The nylon should be nice and light...

I will look at the wire rope/cable, though. That would work pretty well, I think.

Just make sure you do a better job than Chrysler did with the factory ones on the Viper Competition Coupe. At this weekend's Petit le Mans, one of the Viper CC's stalled or something at the start, and the crash truck tried to tow it off the track surface. The car moved for maybe ten or twenty feet, then the tow "eye" came loose, just about the time the leaders got back to the front stretch. Screwups all around, but the tow "eye" pulling off was a major one.

That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. The TMS strap, while similar in concept, relies on the bumper to pull the car out. However, on my car at least, the bumper was not designed to be pulled on, so I'll be wrapping the strap around the chassis.
