Golf Version 3.2

Here it is - ITB Golf v.3.2

new3.2.jpg

We got it towed to Cameron's shop this morning - after handling the paperwork and writing checks totaling a whopping $378 to make it ours.

It's a plain-Jane 1994 OBD1 Golf III, without sunroof, air, central locking, or ABS. Somewhat surprisingly, it does have rear discs. It's straight and, after we charged the battery, it started right up and drove fine.

The gearbox is crunchy (it's a 5-speed), and the hood looks like it opened on the highway at some point. The driver's door was also jimmied but we have spares in stock. (Thanks, Bill!) All in all, a hell of a deal.

The plan is to get it stripped right down, get a Competition Cages jungle gym welded into it, and get it painted (fridge white, of course). Then, we'll either (a) let it hang out as a spare, against damage to Pablo, or (B) finish it as a second car, for rentals or whatever. It might even be available as a second team car for the VIR 13 hours in November, if there is sufficient co-driver interest out there.

If/when we do build it up, it will be an optimized ITB car rather than a compromise, multi-purpose tool like our current ride. We've proven the Project GTI concept, by demonstrating that we can run Regionals "there or thereabouts" with a street-legal car - one that can also rally, hillclimb, and rallycross. Now, we're interested to see what a more pure roadracing version of the Golf III is capable of.

Looks cool Kirk!!! 5-speed? does that mean you don't need a pedal cluster?

This must be the "orphan" you were telling me about at the 12 hour. Looks like it will be a fun winter project.
Good Luck.

That's right, Bill. The paperwork indicated that it was an auto but when it arrived at Cameron's, he called me with the good news.

Kirk,

You going for one of those high-falutin' VWMS units???

Based on the performance of the KAAZ unit that I got this year, I'm thinking that for a roadrace-only build, I might go back to the future and do the actual no-slip, spool part - that emulates a welded diff. Not spending any money on it this week, though.

Kirk,

I did see someone selling a used Quaife on Vortex for $500.

Eh. Not a huge Quaiffe fan. The more I think about it, the more I think that the narrower parameters defined by a road course setting make a spool the good answer. I'm understanding now that, regardless of how the car is set up on top of the KAAZ, it's still going to behave differently on the throttle than off. Now, Mark C. or someone will probably point out for me that I shouldn't ever BE off-throttle...

Kirk, a spool is just a light weight "locked" diff. Yes, you need to drive it a little differently than with an open or a LSD.

Brake in a straight line, downshift or brake for the corner, turn in, and mash the loud pedal.

The car won't turn if your not on the gas.

It does take a little more effort to parallel park, or turn 90 degrees into your paddock spot.

I've been running for years, and apart from the usual maintenance of changing out the front hubs and 1/2 shafts every year, I've only had 1 CV failure in 8+ years of running a "locker". That was an inside CV during a practice / qual session.

Exactly, Grasshopper. Remember that when I first stated playing this game, we had esentially two options - the diff that came in the car (and only a tiny number of them had LSDs), and a welded lump of iron. I've always been OK with the second option.

But don't get me wrong - I think the KAAZ unit is pretty good so far. I'm getting ready for the Rally Tennessee and it will be great on tarmac stages and transits. A spool would be a little too much in that situation.

I didn't know that Bildon has the spool but I got my KAAZ from them. It functions entirely differently than the Quaiffe.

Not for very long, anyways...

I've never driven a welded diff on a FWD car, I'd like to try it sometime. I have three LSD's: Quaife, VWMS, cam & pawl (Gemini). In terms of pure speed I prefer the diffs in this order: the VWMS, Cam& Pawl (Gemini) and Quaife. The disadvantages of the VWMS unit are that it is expensive, the clutch packs will wear out and the rebuild parts are hard to come by and expensive; the Cam& Pawl is by design a self destructive unit but lightweight and works well; the Quaife is very heavy compared to the other two but is a great compromise, does have some wheelspin issues, and has little to no maintenance.
