Helmet question

Asking for your input. In a closed cockpit car full face or open face helmet and why? I'm thinking of going to an open face style hemet

Manny--Full face is preferred in all cars.

It is safer. Keep the shield on it too. You don'y necessarily have to use the shield, but it should be available.

Simply put, stuff flies all around the car--inside and out--and you can use the protection.

I have never worn an open face helmet and never will.

I've seen too many videos, heard too many stories, and have seen too many instances in person where having a full face helmet with a visor saved a driver from serious injury or at the very least an eye full of dirt. I will admit I don't drive with my visor down all the time, but I just feel better with a full closed face helmet. Yes you can wear goggles, but there's still a large portion of face to destroy should something fly through the windshield at you.

Plus they look better. :p

There was an in-car video posted here or on the brown forum showing a half-shaft coming off a car and impacting the windshield of the car behind. It did not penetrate, but did crack the glass, spraying glass pieces in the interior. Stuff happens, not often, but why take the chance?

If you want, Manny, I could do the "list of stuff that's flown into closed race cars." It would start with a Fiat crank throw with portion of a rod attached, completely through the windshield of the car in front of me at my second driver's school...

There's enough answer for me right there. Unless there's nobody in view in front of me, my visor stays down.

Ok guys i get the message. I do thank you all for your input. You have brought up some good reasons why to stay with the full face. I thank you again. :023:

1 more, how much longer can i use my SA2005 helmet?

Snell has been updating their specifications every five years and SCCA accepts the two most recent standards (currently 2005 and 2010). There is normally a one year delay to allow the new standard to get into production and distribution. So your SA2005 will probably be good through 2016.

Probably to the end of 2016 (a year following the introduction of SA 2015 Helmets).

Then you will need an SA 2010 or 2015
