Inner Door Handle

Dose anyone know if it is requiered to have the inside door handle realease if the door has been gutted and replaced with a sheetmetal pannel?

There's no provision that I know of that allows it to be removed but I haven't looked specifically for one. Unless you can find a reference allowing removal, you can't take it out.

I need to do a little research, but I seem to remember a rule (perhaps in the GCR instead of the ITCS) that requires the ability to unlatch the door from the inside.

I was wrong.

From the ITCS, 17.1.4.D.9.f.:

"The driver's door window glass, window operating mechanism, and inside door latch/lock operating mechanism may be removed..."

If it says you can, you bloody well can.

gee andy I thought it was just me. I am not sure when you would gut a door and then skin it with alum.
you gut the drivers side for nascar bars or you replace uphostery with alum on any door but not both.

Good catch Dick. I meant to comment on that and forgot.

But, to answer your question, if I were to build NADSCAR bars in a cage, I would probably still over the opening with aluminum with a cavity for the NADSCAR bars. It would mean welding the cavity to the skin, but it would be nice and tidy.

i guess if you reskin your passenger door with aluminum sheet you would have to make a provision for the stock inner handle to work...

And don't forget the window crank, or switch, to roll down the window that shouldn't be there, I mean, that must be rolled down!!! Seriously, the car I used for Drivers School had electric windows!

The RX7 that we raced in the ESCORT series not only had electric windows, it had electric mirrors. Great for adjusting after driver changes.

My ITA car has an electric window (only one, since the driver's door glass is removed for NASCAR bar installation, and a power mirror (again, only one, since I removed the passenger side one and replaced it with a 5" convex).

Hah. My car will retain the electric windows. In my car, replacing the electric mechanisms with manual will save all of about 3 lbs total!
 
Not to mention being able to close the windows on the grid when it's raining or cold!

I experienced the downside of this when I put the windows up when we were black flagged-all at NHIS last year during heavy rain and then forgot to put them back up when we went back out. I got black flagged and lost many positions while in the pit putting the windows back down. I would have been better off leaving them down in the pits and getting soaked.
