We are looking forward to another year of fun, fast driving, and safety in 2005! There are now two regions in our area, NASA OH/IN, and NASA Midwest. 12 events anywhere from Iowa to Pennsylvania! Wow! NASA is really starting to make a presence in the Midwest!

One question, though: what do I need to do to race in terms of license? I have an SCCA Regional license (I'll be completing the 6 regionals this year for a National).

Bill:

As long as I have a copy of your SCCA medical on hand, and you are a current NASA member, your first event would be run on your current NASA regional license. After that event you would need to get a full NASA license. As long as the event went well, that means sending copies of your medical, your SCCA license, your drivers license, and a $50 check for the licensing fee to the NASA national office, and you would get your NASA license.

I'm interested in licensing requirements too. I had a SCCA national in 2003, but didn't run in 2004. I think SCCA will waive me, whats Nasa's stance? They do seem to be a pretty good bang for the buck. I've looked at some of their race weekend schedules and they do have more track time at less cost. Anybody out there who has run a Nasa event, I would appreciate input on their organization and how it compares to SCCA or Midwest Council regarding price, event organization, track time, on track behavior (I've heard rumors of bump drafting and some banging being tolerated).

Several posters on this forum race in both SCCA and NASA, so you should get good feedback. Everything I have heard about NASA is positive.
 
April 8th at Road America? I'd bring snow tires! I remember a national race at RA in may that had 5" of snow on the sat portion of the event. Bill,you need to check the rules for NASA regarding the roll cage,window net.They have a couple different things than we do.Call me if you want to chat. I also am thinking of running that event. Jim Dentici and i were also thinking about using that event to shake out the new GT Lite car if it is done.

I've been racing with NASA OH/IN since, I guess 2003? Love it... but of course I've inevitably gotten overinvolved, as I'm now one of the founders and directors of a race series within NASA, GTS Challenge. So if I don't like anything about it, I pretty much have just myself to blame!

I was looking at the www.racenasa.com site and I don't see the spec E30 series up there. Did they do away with it?

I run an '87 BMW in ITA and was considering joining NASA just because of that series.

Do you know anything about it?

Well, to my knowledge SpecE30 has not been run in these regions - just VA.

But you'd be quite welcome to run with us in GTS Challenge - as an ITA car, you'd be in GTS1 with me... www.gtschallenge.com

As for making it to St. Louis - well, the schedule's up there. But I know there's plenty of interest from racers further south, all the way to Oklahoma! Seems like there's a lot of uncovered territory between IL and TX without much if any NASA activity...

Gateway is a track that we are persuing for 2006 for one or two events. We just couldn't fit it into the overall schedule for 2005.

Like Vaughan said, we are running the GTS Challenge series, where most of the E30 cars would be placed. I believe the would run as GTS1 cars, and be competitive there!

Wow! That's a great schedule for the Road America event, even if I do have to run on the snow tires! I have two further questions to help me plan my year:

1) What class would an ITA Saturn run in?

2) What is the expected cost for the Road America event?

ITA cars get mapped to PS2 (Pro Sedan, not Pro Saturn!)... and ITS to PS1, ITE to PS0... unless there's other series they'd fit into, like German IT cars, etc.

Actually, as I think about it, your car might also be eligible for USTCC (Touring Car), if not optimized. Heck, yeah, in fact one of the guys in the area is running an SW (1 or 2, don't remember, presumably 2)! Fully kitted-out to touring specs, actually very cool looking!

I'm guessing the chance that you will be acknowledging SE-R Cup in Indiana/Ohio is pretty slim. Just wanted to confirm whether I'll be using an "SR" on the side of the car or a "PS2".

SE-R Cup is a full class in OH/IN and Midwest. There should be a choice for it when signing up at www.nasaproracing.com .

Fees for both the Mid Ohio and Road America Events are:

Sprint Racing:
3 Day $395
2 Day $255

HPDE:

In just 44 days the OH/IN Region of NASA Pro Racing will visit Mid Ohio Sports Car Course April 1-3, and 7 days later the Midwest Region will visit Road America April 8-10. These events are open to all levels of driver, from HPDE group 1 – 4, Time Trials, and a Double Sprint Race. There will also be a one hour enduro at each of the events, and a competition licensing school for those ready to get a competition license. There is a ton of track time worked into these events! If I get my car all ready by then, I think I'm going to try and make it out to the Mid Ohio event. I was wondering if you could tell me about the enduro. Mainly, is there any mandatory pit stops or anything like that? I know it's only an hour so it might be possible for some cars to go the entire distance without stopping for gas. But if it's mandatory than it doesn't really matter.

I'm also going to send you an email about another issue but I thought others might like to know about this one.

We mandate a stop during the race. The driver can choose between:

A 2 minute stop with no fuel.
A 5 gallon fuel stop, no time minimum.
A driver change is permitted for either pit stop.

The idea is to promote teamwork. A good fuel stop can pick up some time (if a driver doesn't have someone to fuel their car, or hold the fire bottle, there are always NASA drivers willing to put on the safety gear and help out, and officials that can hold the fire bottle). But a fuel spill means a 1 minute penalty. A driver change is not required, but some split a car during the enduros, so we add the pit stop to help make this a reality. Pit lane speed is 35 MPH.
