I located an 88 RX7 parts car - only problem is it's automatic. Can anybody give me the downside of buying this other than the trans? I expect motor and everything else to be the same - right?

Ben, isn't your car an '89-'91? If so, components like the ECU, AFM, wiring harnesses, etc. will not work. I'm not sure about auto vs. manual tranny but I would not be surprised if the ECU is programmed differently for an auto. If the '88 is cheap enough, you'll probably get your money's worth out of it but I would not pay a lot for an '88 if I am running an '89. As you may recall I lucked up and bought a pretty nice '89 that was running but w/ a bad tranny for $900 (found in this site's classifieds).
 
If the 2nd gen auto's are anything like the 1st gens, you can almost guarantee that the motor hasn't been revved anywhere near the redline or zinged at any point in its slugish automatic life

That's cool - unmolested engine. The car was driven by a gal and it only has 100K on it. Looks pretty clean - I'm picking it up tonight for $500. Can't beat the price - I'll strip stuff off it and sell on ebay! Who wants the plush red velvet seats???

Actually the auto motors have been known to be loaded with carbon buildup. They're never reved long and hard and don't build enough heat to burn it off. If it's not carbon locked it may make a good motor.

The 3.90 gear is a keeper!

The engine/emissions harness is the same. The front harness has different part numbers but an auto harness will work in a manual car if you choose to swap. I think the ECU will also work but I'm not positive.

Does the auto engine have the right counterweight to work with a stick?

The front weight is the same regardless of auto or stick. The rear weight is attached to the flexplate of the auto. When you change to the manual flywheel you'll remove the rear weight with the flexplate. In other words it all works OK.

I got the car - what a steal. Excellent shape body wise and mechanically. Only thing that blows is the interior and that it's auto. I have a parts bonanza! Hopefully I'll never need the motor so I can move my parts wharehouse around easily. Anybody need a brand new stock dual exhuast?

Thanks for the updates on some of the stuff to be aware of with an auto.

Any other info would be most appreciated.
