pre-race check sheets

Next weekend I have my first novice race after being out of competition for about ten years. I was sorting out check sheets for gear, equipment, the car, pre-session, post-session... before building some spread sheets. Then I thought that some of you may already have spreadsheets that I could build off of. It sure would be a time saver. Are any of you real proud of your organization and preparation and do you want to share?

Funny you should mention this. I'm building a new checklist after what happened this weekend.

Based on my experience, I'll suggest the following should be on there:

Torque Lug Nuts!

You should probably put in on there 2 or 3 times just to be sure... (OK, I should put it on there 2 or 3 times just to be sure).

itmanta,
I have a few checklists and spread sheets that I have(borrowed, copied, stole, begged) from someone on this site a few years back and then just added to it, as I needed.
Post your E-mail here and I will send them to you. They are word and excel docs.

Matt,

I will be attending driver's school soon. Racing shortly thereafter. If you wouldn't mind....

That shouldn't be on the list. That should be like a habit that is done before every on track session.

P.S.- Before racing, I thought 'lug nuts' was high fiber cereal.

I'm a freak because I drive the current race car to the track, so my list might not work for anyone else. It's primarily about packing since it presumes that the car is ready to run the first session - or drive to Kershaw - before I leave.

I think of at-track stuff as "after session" rather than "before session" for similar reasons.

Probably the most ignored act is to do a "nut & bolt" check during the race weekend. Just at some point(Sat pm) put the car on jackstands and put a wrench on all the susp parts, driveshaft, etc. You will be amazed at how many times you get 1/2 turn or so from this little act. Just a little extra effort(you only need a 14, 17 and 19mm to do it on most cars)and your comfort level will much higher when you take the green flag.
It can be a little hard on your cars jack points but given the choice...

I too use a check list for race day (and for packing the trailer).

A suggestion that I just implemented is that in addition to putting "tighten lug nuts", add the torque spec also. That keeps crew members from just tighting the lug nuts with whatever setting was left on the torque wrench (like only 20 ft/lbs for the head cover).

I shot photocopies of the exploded diagrams of the major systems (front suspension, rear suspension, etc.), wrote the torque settings next to the fasteners in each picture, and had them laminated like placemats.

This way, I can hand the card and torque wrench to anyone and they can get it right. It also accommodates my failing memory...
