Here is a write up I ripped from our local forum. The author, Craig Farr, is a road racer (DSR). I thought some of you guys might find this interesting. 85 laps for a SM guy over the course of two days all while dodging rain showers. I left the names in as many of you will recognize them. Thanks to all of the workers. The bolding below is mine and not included in the original article.

Nashville Time Trial – 16-17 May 09

For 2009, Chattanooga Region of SCCA put on one of the smoothest Time Trials, at one of the nicest facilities, Nashville Super Speedway (NSS), we have ever run. David McDaniel, along with Bill & Gail Perry, were mainly responsible. TAC/TVR provided a lot of help to the Chattanooga Region. George Bugg was the Chief Safety Steward with Mark Rothermel as a back-up. Rich Crowell ran Tech with Craig Farr helping out. Miles Phillips worked the course with Eden Powell in T&S. Three students from the Sequoyah High School Motorsports Program, Josh Raisor, Ethan Vines and Trae Mock, worked in various spots in Flagging & Communication during the weekend, the entire Dobler Family, Scott, Jennifer, Scotty and Brianna working the event, Steve Tompkins handled communications, Chuck Fullgraf was the Chief Novice Instructor, with Art Thompson and Will Perry also instructing, Bob Forsten as Flag Chief, Loyde Qualls as Start/Finish, with his sons Joel & Todd also working F&C. Casey Tuggle and Cory Simmons handled Grid & Pit Out to make sure everyone got out in safely and in good order. Mark Guagenti, Price Houston, Scot Miller and Ruthie Thompson helped out on the corners and Pit In.

Special thanx goes to the SEDIV TT Series Sponsor, Rich Shafer of Cool Shirt. Rich has been a stalwart supporter and sponsor of TT for many years. His efforts do not go unnoticed by the drivers. Rich smoked the course with a 1:04.067 hitting 181 MPH on the front straight. He says 181 only feels fast when you try to brake.

The weather gave us a challenge on Saturday alternating sunshine with black clouds, thunder, hard rain and lightening. Sunday was cool and dry.

For the weekend, we used the new format (drive till you drop, pass when you get the finger) that we unveiled at TGPR. Seven run groups with 15 minute sessions and passing on the two straights. It was designed to get you 5 on track sessions a day. Again, it operated flawlessly. Joe Clayburn got something like 85 laps in despite the rain. The AMB transponders worked flawlessly and interim results were usually available before we could get the car in the garage and walk over to race control. Setting up in the NASCAR garages is SWEET and made for a family atmosphere. The fervent hope of everyone there is that the event will continue to be repeated annually.

To quote Butch Kummer: “If you haven’t run a Track Trials lately, believe me when I say the format has undergone a MAJOR positive change in 2009! The advent of transponders plus a little bit of common sense on the part of the drivers has allowed us to put multiple cars on the track with controlled passing allowed. The old “three cars to a pod, run three hot laps, and then wait two hours for your next session” has been replaced by ten to fifteen minute sessions with up to ten cars on the track at a time. The old format worked well for a long time, but this new format should bring a tremendous growth of the program once word gets out. Not only is it a LOT more seat time (and fun) for the full-time Track Trials competitor, it’s also a great venue for the road racer wanting to do some testing.”

Fourteen of the 39 entrants were road racers sharpening their skills or getting ready for the Heart of Dixie Double SARRC/ECR on 27-28 June. Eleven SCCA Regions were represented. Eight NEW Track Records were set in SPO, GT1, GTA, SRF, CSP, EP, ITB, and SpecMiata.

The road course is offered as a 1.8 mile course but that must have been measured at the wall since the “line” measures at 1.41 miles. Basically, the course had something for everyone. Two significant horsepower sections to put the hammer down. Then two sections of elevation changing twisties with 2 sweeping 180's, an S and a bus stop chicane. Then the 2 horsepower sections. One where you come out of the bus stop in NASCAR Turn 3 and put the hammer down for a long ways. The other was between the infield section and the bus stop.
