i have a butler aluminum seat. whats the easiest/best approach for attaching the seat back to the cage? thanks a lot

Well, that's one way, but I would add a large, reasonably thick, steel plate between the brace and the seat back. I think mine is 3/16" thick and about eight inches wide by 12 inches tall. It is cut into a hourglass shape to clear the harness holes, and bent to match the contour of the seat.

I just wasn't comfortable with a rod pointed at my spine.

Me neither. Or either. I've pictured it taking a "coring sample" of my back.
