And just think if you are trying to dial the cell phone, change CD's, yell at the kid in the back seat, eat your big mac, have your super big gulp between your leggs, put on your make-up, read the paper, shave, put your clothes on,look at the hobo on the side of the road.....who has time to drive the car, much less look where they are going.


I think we expect too much some times.

Wow... And double wow. What an ignorant bastard that author is. I dont think he actually talked to any "real" enthusiast drivers. Just because he wasnt able to master the coordination it takes to drive a manual isnt our fault.... Besides, how many people do you know who drive automatics and have their left foot hovering over the brake pedal? I would also like to point out that every person who likes manuals over autos states that one of the big benefits is that it keeps you more in tune with the fact that you are driving and helps you pay more attention to whats going on around you. I see a lot of people in their huge-assed automatic SUVs zoning out in traffic because nothing keeps them rooted to the task of driving. Tell me that happens as much with a manual trans Lancer Evo. <sigh> I hate people.....
 
Everyone should be required to learn driving on a stick shift. If you can't handle something that basic then how can you handle all the other things as in the first posting. This past fall in a nearby town the owner of a local repair shop was killed when a new employee was bringing a car in for repair and instead of admitting he never had driven a stick shift it ended in a horrible accident.
 
Some people can't chew gum and walk at the same time. Just like Mr. T says..."I pitty the fool" who can't realize the advantage of shifting! What a knucklehead.

Back in the days in Jamaica, you were required to use a stickshift car to take your driving test. Not sure if it is still so but while I was down there last week, the only automatic vehicle that I saw, was an early '00 Ford f150 that was probably imported in from the states by the owner. How did I know? The steering wheel was on the wrong side

With this little posting I wanted to point out how one idea can get a following if it is well presented. All over the country they are trying for clunker laws that make it near impossible for classic cars to pass somg tests.(boy I could tell stories) It is the kind of thing that will sneek up on you a little at a time. Our race cars are "off road". But I would bet that most of us have an older MG, Triumph,Fiat,Lancia,Datusn...whatever. That we take out on weekend jaunts. We must pay attn. or we might loose them.
 
Weekend jaunts? Wait a minute, I drive a Datsun to work every day.
