Steering wheel lock removal

Howdy all,

Can anyone give me a good tutoring on how to remove the steering wheel lock? The car is an 85 Rx7. I tried searching but didn't find anything

Do you want to totally remove the switch and rewire for a toggle, or continue to use the key switch and just disable the locking mechanism?

Try this link and the associated threads at http://www.wankel.net/rx7-fb-1999/msg00486.html for switch removal. My car came with it already disabled, but still using the ignition switch in place. I did at one time do some reading on it and from memory I think you remove the cylinder (per instruction from above link) and then there is a little latch you remove or grind off.

Good luck and be carefull with the column, no banging with hammers or it likes to collapse.

My initial thought was to simply remove the locking mechanism and retain the key . However, thinking through it, I fear losing the key. . .
Asa result, I'll probably wire up a toggle. Are there any special considerations in that regard?

Hee hee, I've still got the key. In my very first race I hit it with my knee and shut off the engine. Thought I must have blown the engine, since it wouldn't restart from coasting. After a few seconds I tried restarting with the key (it worked), but I bumped the windshield wiper switch in the process. The incar video is hileraous. I think I'll work on a toggle switch this winter, too.

After breaking one ignition switch on my 1st gen while trying to drill out the locking pin I got fancy with the second one and just placed a small piece of aluminum over it to keep it from extending out. Sandwiched it between the lock and the column and never thought about it again. Damned car is probably someplace in Ohio now with the same cheesy but effective solution.

Because the key lived in the car full time to prevent the inevitable "Where the hell did I leave the @#$%^&! key tirades,I solved the key issue in a similar low tech fashion by taking some leftover hood pin retainers and attaching the key to the interior permanently.

Funny story with the wipers - right after I purchased the car I had removed the arms (legal in EMRA) and ran at Pocono. Shut the car off in the (old) garages, and could not figure out what the hell some sort of mechanical noise was coming from the (new to me car) after I shut it off. Took me ten minutes to notice the wiper drives moving...
