Toyo tire pressures?

Does anyone have experience with both Toyo and Hoosier (a3s03) tires? I normally run Hoosiers and try to get them around 40 to 42 psi hot. This past weekend I tried Toyo for the first time (with a NASA event) and by seat of the pants, they also seemed to like low 40's hot. Just wanted to see what folks think. I normally don't have someone at the track that can take temp profiles or pressures in the pits, so I am guessing a bit.

My car is a 2500# 240Z in ITS.

Thanks,
Jeff

I talked to Toyo, used my pyrometer, and used my butt, and it really looks to me like 37-39 is the best pressure for the Toyo RA1. Onve I was getting up to 40-42 I wad getting noticable temp peaks in the center of the tire., and it felt greasier. By backing off to 38, I had MUCH more confidence in the tire, and the temps were pretty even across.

I run a Spec Miata

Cool, thanks for the info guys. So it sounds like I was in the ballpark at least. I was seeing 39 or 38 by the time I got back to my paddock space.

Marty, I'm not sure I understand your question. Yes, I normally run the s03 on my car in SCCA events. This event past was my first w/ NASA so I tried the Toyo since they are cool enough to offer some contingency money.

FYI to hijack my own thread: the NASA weeekend rocked! Way more track time (more than 2x!) than I get w/ SCCA for the same entry fee + there was Toyo money to be had. I'm thinking it might be time to switch which club run the most...

I think he meant the "A" part of the ASO3. Isn't the "A" part for the autocross compound? "R" compounds are road race tires.

I second Eric's recommendations of 38-39 lbs hot.

Of course, I'm in a Miata too....so take it for what it's worth.

Jeff and Kirk, thanks for the tips, but I actually found someone else. In the latest SportsCar there is an ad with Frisy Race Tires listed. They guy was super nice and the price for Toyo RA1 is $110 (+ $15 to shave).

If you're looking for tire, give 'em a shot: www.frisbyracetire.com

I just bought a set of Toyos from Frisby. Great price, $114 for 225/50-14. Only thing I'm not sure about, is the shaving. They are shaved, but not nearly as much as Vilven shaves off. They aren't quite full tread, but they would work as rains. You may want to specify tread depth for the shaving.

Lets elaborate on the toyo pressures. I find that on the 1-hour enduros that we do, 38-39 psi is too much for the latter of the race, thus the tires getting too greasy. I try to not let them get past 34-35 sometimes 36, starting out at 28 rear & 26 front.

ITA CRX.

I also flip the tires on the rims between race weekends to get max. even wear (in the dry of course).

Racer025,

Thanks for the feedback there, that's exactly what I'm seeing, beginning of the race for the first 30 minutes or so, it's nice. THe last 5, it's greasy and slick.. It might be me overdriving the car, but I'll play with pressures too.
