Transmission problems

Here is the problem, 5 speed tranny worked fine until I changed final drives from 4.25 to 4.9. We also put in new 1/2 and 3/4 forks, new syncro's on all gears. First time had problem going into third gear it would act like it wa in but when you released clutch it was not there and needed to be bumped into 3rd again for it to stay. This was only under race conditions. We tore down tranny again and did not find any issues. We installed new shift rod which tightened the complete system up. It nows seems to shift harder even considering the friction of new shift rod. Only raced 6 laps before engine failure but still had problem from 5th to 4th not getting in gear and even third was difficult. I am at a loss as to what the problem could be. Any thoughts?:(

with case split, run it in each gear and spin the input shaft. Close case and shift each gear spinning input shaft. Should turn smooth.

sounds like either a boogered up 3-4 slider and hub, worn shifter fork, or interlock guide bolt not installed properly.

Take pics of everything.

Are you sure you pull all the check balls for the shifter forks back into place? Those are what holds the tranny into selected gear.

New forks, new syncro's, the hub was burn't on one side but appears good. The collar that fits between 3/4 gear oil holes were not aligned properly so I put another collar that had alignment holes ligned up. (another honda wonder why they would use 2 different collars on same tranny) The bearing was fine which one would think if it was not getting oil it would have cooked it. All the detent balls were installed. Really can explain the blueing on one side of the collar?

debris inside the shaft will cause the bearings to not get oiled, and turn blue.

Every wonder where all the little pieces of plastic from a bad input shaft bearing go????

I always ask for pictures on the problem tranny........what can I say, I like tranny porn.

It's just I'll see little issues others don't......

Blueing is from heat and lack of oil. Usually 4th and 5th gear on the mainshaft.

I'll send pictures when I get down. I know the oil problem first hand as i put main shaft bearing in upside down on main shaft and fried 4/5 after 2 laps.

Well we pulled the tranny and noticed a slight miss alignment of the pressure plate to the clutch disc and throw-out bearing. The throw-out bearing is hitting the fingers offset by about 1/8 to 1/4". If you look at the clutch disc and pilot bearing and pressure plate fingers the fingers are not centered with disc and and pilot bearing. IS it possible the clutch was dissengaging evenly?

Did you get the 4.9 Final Drive and shaft from King? Was it recent or a while ago. I have a King final drive and it had to be modified by King. The newer units (sold but not made by King) fit better.

I had the 5 to 4 issues, could get into 5 but not back out. Turned out to be an indent ball missing that wouldn't release out of 5th and push into 4th.

This was a newer gearX final but I don't see the relation between a final drive and detent ball? There would be no reason to disassemble the shift forks were the detent balls are located to change out a final drive. What exaxtly did they modify?
