I am trying to sort out the parts codes on the 020 transmissions so I can figure out which gear ratios the stack of trannies that I inhgrited have. Any guidence would be greatly apprciated.

Thanks. Both sites are great info. Now I can get to finding a close ratio 5 speed so I can get out of 3rd gear. Thanks again.

Remember that you can only up- and back-date among years/models on your specific spec line. I am not the VW P/N expert but if the 4K and/or 9A came in, say, an '83-84 GTI (listed in ITB), it would not be a legal swap into a '75-80 ITC bunny or Scirocco that never had it. Just a hypothetical example but illustrative perhaps...

OK. These last two replies seem to take most options away. The FF and GC Trannies that seem to have originally come in my 1980 ITC Rabbit are basically the same. I am assuming the up/backdating applies to final drive gears as well. Almost every driver I spoke with at Pocono, Limerock, and NHIS are catching 4th at some point. Is my car that underpowered or am I missing something?

You can run whatever R&P ratio you want, as long as it fits in a stock case. The ITC Rabbits/Sciroccos all have the wide-ratio boxes.

Bill beat me to it but do yourself a giant favor and don't do ONE thing (or one MORE thing?) to the car before getting a rule book. People - even the wizards here at it.com - will give you all kinds of wrong info about what you can and can't do and none of them will come to your rescue if you are confronted by a rules NERD and protested.

You probably already know about the Jetta "Coupe" rare sheetmetal issue, right?

I was going to mention that earlier, I would refrain from making a 2dr Jetta racecar. I race one in Ontario, Canada and had a tough time finding a suitable car to take a rear panel to repair crash damage that I sustained when I had a 'moment' in corner two. The damage at least wasn't bad enough to warrant grafting another rear body on to the racecar, we managed to put it on the rack and pull it straight.

After this experience, I would strongly suggest using a 4dr chassis.

Yes, GC and FF are correct for 1980, but you're also allowed anything from 1975-1979, right? From memory, I think those years included GY, GP, GH, GF, GC, FO, FK and FF codes. Some of those codes may have been diesels or pick-ups, but you get the idea. In addition, there were several versions of FF, and probably at least two versions of GC. There's info in the Haynes and Bentley manuals for that era, as well as the microfiche, but I wouldn't trust all of it. Better to count teeth, or at least to count turns of the input shaft. For the 4-speeds, there are at least two 3rd gears (1.37 and 1.29), and at least two 4th gears (.97 and .91). Same goes for the 5-speeds, plus either a .76 or a .71 5th. If using an FF, be aware that they drastically changed the ratios without changing the code sometime between late 1980 and early 1981!

...with the notable exception of those from the diesel or pick-up.
