What do you do about all the wires?

So I have finally finished clearing out the interior of the car of carpeting, panels, etc, etc.

So now I have a nice steel tub with MILES of exposed wiring snaking all over the place. It's ugly.

What did you all do about it? Hide it all in some sort of sheathing? Or does everyone's IT car look like all the colors of the rainbow, all over the car?

If you get it at a commercial supplier rather than at the local auto parts place, that black snakey-looking plastic sheathing is reasonbly priced and cleans things up. On the new car, I actually just wrapped small bundles with black electrical tape, replacing the dried-out "friction tape" that was on them originally. Larger bundles got a spiral of tape rather than a complete wrap, so they aren't so rigid.

They haven't been located yet in the pic but that should give you a sense of where things went. We also got very lucky in that the basis of this car was a de-contented early Golf - no AC, ABS, electric mirrors, etc. - so it was WAY simpler than Pablo I in this respect.

Hockey tape. Its what I used. for that one harness under your pedals I would wrap it in the plastic wire cover and go from there.

Just rip all those wussie wires outta there. Get yourself a good carburetor, magneto and mechanical fuel pump and you're good to go.

It'll look a lot better, too.

They should change the wording of the rule so that if you can remove the bell or whistle you can remove the associated wiring. The requirement to retain all the vestigial street legal crap only increases the cost to race without any real benefit.

The wires under the pedals, I'd run over the steering colum when you have the dash and colum out to install the cage. It'll look way better if you can tuck the wires up and out of sight, let alone safer to keep from getting tangled in the bundle of snakes during an emergency. All the vestigal wires that run to no where I'd roll up into a loop and tie off where it hit's the harness, or even cut all that tape and roll them up under the dash too. You'll need lots of large diameter plastic wire loom and wire claps. I put my battery cut off switch on the passenger side of the cage, where I spliced in a short length of battery cable to give enough room to place it where I can reach from my seat with the belts loose. I also added wires so that when either the BCS or the main toggle are flipped, the fuel pump and computer key wire looses power and are grounded out. This way there's no chance of the alternator feeding back power and keeping the motor running even with the battery disconnected or the key off. Good luck,
