Are coilovers always allowed?

You're forgetting the spring must be of the same type so using the "gas pressure as a spring" idea only works if you are going to crank up the gas pressure. Fitting an additional metallic spring would not be allowed. And before anyone gets any bright ideas, high internal pressure is not a good idea.

Darin, I was not referring to the original rule but the change to the coilover rule. As Russell has pointed out, that change w/ nothing more does set up an arguable inconsistency between the 2 rules that is not tortured IMO. What I am implying is that the new rule allowing coilovers should have been conditioned by language to the effect of "on cars where the shock is mounted inside a coil spring." Those few words would have spared us this discussion and perhaps trouble for someone down the road.
