***That reminds me of another question I had about removing the windshield washer bottle: Can I drain the washer fluid?***

Did your car come from the factory with an empty windshield washer bottle.

I am really sorry that I even looked at this thread. I read the initial two posts, when they were the only two posts. Noticed that there were 20+ posts, so it piqued my interest. Valuable lesson here.

Probably not. The fluid was added later at dealer prep.

Actually, washer fluid is a factory fill item. As a resident engineer at an assembly plant, I am well aware of warranty claims that dealers make at PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection) for washer fluid top off. It's about $2, not a big deal, but it counts as 1 repair, and we get dinged (internally) for poor quality, equal to an engine pull. So: If you purchase your new vehicle from a dealer, the washer fluid better be full; and I'll really be mad if the washer bottle is empty AND I got dinged for the fluid top off by the dealer!

Yea, and we should be allowed to take the frigging glass out of the passenger door too. So there. What about that thread?

I hate to "highjack" this old thread back to it's original question (although the "discussion" that ensued is certainly entertaining), but has the question of the style/size of the 0.060 aluminum sheet ever been addressed? My specific question: can I use multiple pieces of sheet to cover the door face? Working with multiple smaller pieces would be easier than one large one when it comes to fitting it to the door. As long as I still cover the entire surface, would this be considered "legal"? Anyone have any first hand experiences or recommendations?
Thanks!

I feel (I'm going to start all my answers that way from now on...my counsel advised me to that end!

) that you sould have no issues, as the overlaps of the panel would creat a situation where you have more weight than you would with a single peice.

That said, and I know you didn't ask, but removing components from within the door cavity is a no no, nor are you allowed to break your glass and place it in a bag at the bottom of the door, although many guys want to for various competitive and safety reasons.

Practically speaking you should be fine.

Steve, I have a 1st gen RX-7 & replaced the interior door panel with one piece of .060 alum IIRC 17 inches x 48 inches ech side. The bare door at the top where you would rest your arm if you were playing Wilbur the window leach has an approx 4 inch raised area. I attached the alum at the bottom of this raised area & custom fit it to the other three sides of the door. Didn't require the full 48 inches but that was a simple buy because the stuff comes in a 4 foot x 8 foot sheet & I had them cut two 17 inch pieces. The cost was approx $40.00. Purchased the stuff from Metal Express who has places around the middle of the country. Try www.metalmart.com for a potential lcation near you.

Jake, the words are replace the interior trim panel & I dought anyone has bent the sucker ovver the top edge of the door like the original. That would be tough for the normal racer to do with .060 material.

Thought I would CMA.

Steve,

How soon do you actually need these panels? When we make Bruce's panels we're going to make a template to make exact copies pretty quickly and easily. I've already done this with my 944.

No great hurry, just looking at the next step I can take in preparation for next spring. Let me know what you come up with, I'd love to see it.
