Little Dump Cans

That's a little goofy. There isn't a "5-gallon fuel jug" out there that can't hold more than that, if you fill it right to the hose.

At the VIR 3.5 hour, I actually filled them only to the 5 mark - primarily so I knew precisely how much fuel went in - so it kind of seems to me that the rule should be more about the amount of juice in the can, than about how much will fit.

John- I'll take you up on that next time I'm down south

The Acura team did put them to good use. Somewhere on the web is a picture of Off Camber's setup; its worked realy well also. I'm looking for it now.

Kirk, the reasoning is that these are advertised to hold 6 gallons, and its known they pour faster than than a normal can. Jerry elected simply to not approve them for use. Its a cost svings for everyone that already has decent cans.

Marcus,

What I hear you saying is that NASA won't allow cans that flow faster than some established flow rate. Not sure if I understand why. Not sure about NASA, but I know that some of the endurance races I've been involved with, put a min. time limit on pit stops where you take fuel. IIRC, it was something like 1:30 at the Moroso 24 hr race. I'll have to check the supps for the Summit Point race.

I'm also not sure if I like the idea of one person being able to deem something illegal.

Yeah - I understand. I'm just not buying it.

If I re-engineer my "decent cans" to pour faster (I would, if I didn't have the unleaded restrictor being the limiting factor at this point), would they be illegal?

If the jugs in question were exactly the size that they are but had never been advertised as "holding more than 6 gallons," would they be legal at this point in time?

Bill, Kirk really hit the nail on the head. They are advertised to to hold 6 gallons. NASA's rule limits a team to 10 gallons of fule in hot pit any given time.
We all know most five gallon cans can hold more, that's not really a secret. Coupling the fact that these are the fastest flowing, and they advertise the 6 gallon limit was enough for Jerry to call foul.

Kirk, lots of guys modify their "std." cans, bigger vents, relocated vents, etc. unless you get outrageous, no one is going to say much. I believe the answer to your question would be that if there was no advertising, they would be legal. That is of course my own WAG....

The details are fuzzy, and I can't find their explanation of it. I think the 2nd pipe ran back up through the cap, and was long enough to reach the bottom of the jug. When the tank was full, the vent hose would fill the tip with fuel and stop the jug from dumping as the pressure (?) equalized. I'll look around and see if I have their real explanation.

Marcus,

First, I doubt they're the "fastest flowing", but that doesn't really matter. And by the logic that you state, I could take my 8 gallon cans, advertise them at 5 gallons, and as long they didn't flow to fast, they'd probably be legal.

I'm botherered by being subject to some arbitrary flow value (or more accurately, someone's arbitrary perception of what is "too fast").

You want to make sure that people don't have more than 10 gal. of fuel (I assume there's also a size limit on the container, nothing larger than 5 gal.) in the hot pits? Put it in the supps that random checks of fuel jugs will be conducted. Any jug found to contain more than the allowed max (e.g. 5 gallons) will be confiscated, and the team will be assessed a 1 lap penalty for each infraction. And if it means a team loses all their fuel jugs, oh well, it was in the supps, and they should have known before they came. Non-complaint containers will be returned at the end of the event.
